Company History

Founded by John Rowat in 1882, Rowat Cut Stone & Marble Co. is one of the oldest businesses in Des Moines – and still operates out of what is now one of the oldest buildings on the east side of the city. When many businesses were working solely with granite, John Rowat worked not only in granite but grew the product line to include marble, limestone and other natural stones. His classic ornamentations can still be seen on buildings across central Iowa today.

A family business, John eventually passed the company on to his son and on to his son after that. It wasn't until 1985 when the family decided to sell the business to the current owner, Teresa Van Vleet Danos, an Omaha native.

Today, Rowat Cut Stone & Marble Co. distributes, fabricates and installs a wide variety of natural cut stone originating from Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. The company serves landscape professionals, architects, contractors, masons and homeowners with the largest selection of natural stone products and an inventory that runs to several thousand items. Rowat also offers quality restoration services and stone design for commercial and residential applications. From countertops to custom floors and patios, all the carving and fabrication work is done by hand just like it has been for the past 129 years.
